I picked up a 23/24 Smoke 158 looking for a directional board that obviously turns, but also floats low angle better than my first year Amplid Surfari. My Surfari 157 has incorrectly drilled insert packs (drilled with the wider 161 pattern), so I have to ride the inner-most holes front and rear in order to get my desired stance width.
The Smoke is fairly stiff — stiffer in every dimension than my daily, a Surfari 157. It is not a plank, but the torsional flex is surprisingly rigid. I’d describe it as powerful, smooth/damp — what you’d expect from a burly freeride deck. For me it’s a good conditions and open run board. I had it out early season and did not gel with how rigid the torsional flex was. The shallow side cut depth, coupled with the stiff flex made the effort more than I like to bend the board into tighter turns on crowded pistes. Just for reference, my OG Surfari has a 9.1 sidecut radius that flexes into whatever shape you can power it into.
The standout feature that I noticed on this deck was the ease of glide while on base and on edge. I had Hertel Super Hot Sauce on it and it had glide for days. On edge, it feels fast in the sense that there is less friction than I’m accustomed to with more conventional sidewall/edge profiles.
