Re: BINDINGS

Post by jota »

yesterday I was about to buy the mercury because of EL :D :D . I'm looking for a smooth hiback, I like ride more with my feet not with the hiback and like it short and smooth. But when I saw my boot in the binding, doubts entered my mind. I use vans infuse 8us and I tried mercury M. I always used B bindings in size S, with 7.5us boots and now 8us and they have always been on the limit of the size, that is, totally fair with the binding. The problem is that in the Mercury M, I see some space between the boot and the binding. Very little space on the hiback and 0,5cm on each side at the toe.

I don't know if it´s normal, and if is better go to hanger 3 (more response)?, or better to go to hanger 2 and go more just? Or do you know if hanger 3 arrives next year in size S?
M size is for 7 to 10 us

In murasaki https://www.murasaki.co.jp/brand/rideli ... f075852d8b in NOW it appears that size S reaches 8us but it doesn't make sense IMO that they change all the hardgood now and adjust sizes when now they already have size S up to 7us... In Jones only sizes m and l continue to appear.

@Vanni Is your riding good with size m?

Thanks for your comments

I'll definitely sell my Now Drive Hanger 3.0 at the end of the season. The riding is good, but I think I can center better my boots with smaller bindings, and make the toe straps work better.

Jones Mercury, from the next year, will be offered in Hanger 3.0 Size S, I'll purchase them.

But keep in mind my boots are size 7

here you can find Jones 2024 catalog:
https://www.hasco.co.jp/jonessnowboards/catalog/

For the pics you posted here, I think the size M Hanger 3 (Jones or Now) works better from boots size 8 and up.
Then, it depends also from boot to boot.
The baseplate is the same.

@jota if you have that much space, I'd probably wait for small Hanger 3.0s or switch to a Hanger 2.0 binding. I went from maxing out length and width on Hanger 2.0 medium with size 10 Adidas to being much closer to the middle in Hanger 3.0 medium.

I wouldn't read too much into SkateTech sizing charts. NOW's sizing charts have always been a cluster fuck, even before they introduced Hanger 3.0 they would just arbitrarily shift the binding size ranges year to year from like 2016 - 2019.

Also NOW is doing some bonkers line changes with the Drive. The Drive was Hanger 2.0 for 2021, became Hanger 3.0 for 22 and 23, but is going back to Hanger 2.0 for 24, except the new Drive Carbon and the Drive Pro will both be Hanger 3.0 in 24.

I think all Jones bindings are Hanger 3.0 except the lowest end model (Meteorite) which is 2.0. So that's probably where that specific discrepancy you're showcasing in the catalog comes from.

@Vanni @kimchi I will do that, i will try hanger 2 and next s size hanger 3. I love and hate B est , but i know how they works and you can adjust in all directions and put the boot were you want. Jones is very different and i think i must to do the right steps and dont buy to buy
Thank you very much guys for your recommendations/feedback

Spenser wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 4:06 pm Don’t want to further accidentally turn this into a now thread 😜 but just cause it throws people off sometimes - yes there’s a “hinge” and the solid baseplate rocks back & forth, but it’s a minor movement, and the overall design & bushings keep the binding planted on the board as per usual - there’s no hinge/rocking feeling (although I heard reports of that during their first production year). It’s simply the same general motion as a traditional binding flexing, but designed into the baseplate to be useful. Again, I think it’s a pretty simple approach, nothing complicated. Wish I had tried them years ago.

If I couldn’t ride them, I’d probably go back to a stiffer B with heel hammock
Hello, @Spenser now I have a problem that I did not have before. In the last 20 years I have had B type diode bindings... poster... but in the last few years I customized my diode base with the hiback genesis. It's an exceptionally good combination for me. I ride the hiback completely vertical, my boot does not touch the top of the hiback, only the hammock, I like it that way, something loose without noticing pressure, since it allows me to ride with my feet and It feels more loose and playful. suddenly I felt this problem when I moved to a 4x4 board where I had to put my old cartel and I found that pressure and that problem

The problem is that because of you, :D :D :D now I'm poisoned with NOW and I'm sure I'll buy the Mercury Jones, but I have a doubt that when ride this hiback it feels a lot and pushes my boot forward too much. In EL you say that the Mercury has a hiback with little inclination for those who have them.

Since you talk about "They don’t feel “stiffer” to me, but they have a more connected feeling to their response because of the NOW design concept. Depends what you want. If you’re the type to run your highbacks at zero and generally are “using” the low end of response for a cartel/force/etc, then maybe the pilot or mercury works. If you’re the type who likes response and maybe uses some forward lean, essentially utilizing more of the available response, drives may be the way to go." and talk about the hammocks as something that you liked, I understand that you know both and you can still give me your feedback since I have seen the mercury but I could not try them and I tested their driving.

and then comes the problem of the size that I already asked EL since I am 8us and the size s mercury 2023 is small up to 7us and the medium is large (there is space betwen the binding and the boot)... so the same problem and I can not go to the mercury and go to another m with hanger 2... :x :x

Summing up, the question is whether the Mercury (more than the Mercury that I'm looking at, the Jones in general or now) feel in the boot and are going to push me or are they going to feel comfortable and loose if I put them vertical like it happens with genesis hibacks

thank you so much

Mercury has like 3-4 degrees forward lean without adding any, and the highback is pretty soft medial but a lateral wing that you feel when leaning into it. Doesn’t bend back a lot. Jones footpads seem stiffer than the Now I had at least.

I have Cartel, Genesis, composite and carbon highbacks from Burton with zero forward lean that I ride regularly, and it’s just the wing on the Mercury I feel much when swapping. I like the Brigade highback from Now better, but there is some difference in size from Hanger2 Now and Hanger3 Jones.

thank you very much @casjcade your feedback on the mercury hiback is great for me :D :D
I customize everything so I thought about customizing the genesis hibacks to put them in the jones but it's already a delicate or impossible job. I am also now thinking about brigade and putting the B straps but I like the idea of surf mode since I want more grip on the foot and less on the ankle... I also thought about buying a diode (hard) reflex base and putting the genesis hibacks but they are from est and don't fit....

Too much thinking.... :?

The last option is a genesis reflex becouse I like the idea of trying jones/now and it´s what i want to try

Thank you

What I have noticed with Now/Jones, is that I’d go for the carbon hanger for sure if I get another one, and then there’s just the O-Drive I think. The regular 2 and 3 hangers have too much movement in them, and the 1 was too narrow.

So, I have hanger 3 Drives, and to me they are perfect. A full change out to Burton straps and they are good to go. Interesting @jota that you mentioned the forward lean. I don’t notice it at all, I also don’t notice the “wing” in any negative manner. I ride 22” 18/-9 and they feel just tits to me.

I get being picky and having your wants and tweaks to stuff, and obviously I have modded my NOWs, but I think that you are over thinking it on the front end. I think you just need to buy some and ride them and then go from there. Trying to mod them or figure them out before you’ve even ridden them sounds a bit much. FWIW, it took @Spenser two tries to like NOWs. I sent him a pair to ride and he sent them back and wasn’t impressed with them at all. Then later he decided to try them again and the second time he took to them.

So, I think you just need to jump in and get them.

As far as sizing goes, JONES/NOWs are identical. They use the exact same molds for their base plates. The Nidecker group is notorious for not getting specs right on catalogs, and even their websites at times. The Nidecker group is not springing for separate molds for JONES/NOW.

I can assure you the sizing is identical between brands.

My best suggestion, having owned many, many different NOWs and having been on them for 10 years now, I would get next years IPO if I were you and start from there.
