Yea, I never trust MFG stated weight. Wood varies for a variety of reasons and unless a MFG is using pre-preg glass ( which to my knowledge no has since Option went out of business ) there’s gonna be a lot of variance with the epoxy seeing as it’s all done by hand and eyeballed.

I bought a rowing machine this last spring, and it has hugely impacted my cardio. I’m way more motivated to regularly workout seeing as I don’t need to leave the house and it’s a zero impact workout.spurist wrote: Sun Dec 11, 2022 8:06 pm.
Except my poor cardio/VO2, but that's just incentive to go more often.

I need to seriously work on my cardio while I’m on the sidelines. I was getting gassed a lot more easily last season than prior years. I also might only get 1 or 2 days this season so I can’t really afford to get back my riding legs on slope, I need to elevate my fitness baseline before I even get there.

Re: Expensive Divorce - The Split Thread
is pre-preg the same as pre-cured? K2/Ride are using that in a few higher end boards. not full sheet, just sections.pow_hnd wrote: Sun Dec 11, 2022 8:40 pmYea, I never trust MFG stated weight. That term sounds familiar re: capita some years ago

No such thing as pre-cured. At least not that you could use in board construction. It needs to cure while inside the deck to bind all the materials together.
Pre—preg is just glass that has a machine apply the expo to it, but the machine distributes it 100% evenly which results in a lot of benefits. Consistency in flex, weight, durability, to just name a few, plus the workers don’t have to be exposed to live epoxy and it reduces construction time.
Now pre-preg is allowed to “dry” to an extent, but when placed in a press with heat the epoxy liquifies again and then cures.

Stretches the fibers more when you press, in theory at least.

I got the HTH and spent a couple days waffling back and forth between keeping it or a new replacement Backwoods I snagged. I committed to just tearing the HTH out of the shrink wrap and just trying when I can get out this season. If I hate it Burton always has good resale value and I know I like the Backwoods, even if it's not my dream board.kimchi wrote: Thu Dec 08, 2022 1:12 pm Anyone got experience with Burton splits? I keep looking at the Hometown Hero, can snag a good price locally. They only make the 162 in split variant (and only the 160 in solid) which is a little annoying. If they made a 162 solid I might own my first Burton board in 15 years (last one was the 07 Cat Uninc).
I like the shape and profile better than my Backwoods. My primary concerns are:
- Seems heavy? I haven't put it to a scale, but just lifting it feels notably heavier than my Backwoods.
- I have to use the Burton slider pucks, which are plastic. Can't use my Spark pucks any more.
- Slider system means no Karakorams, although I don't like my Karakorams for anything other than use on my Drifts so don't know that this is a big loss anyway. I guess I'd still like the option if possible. I guess no Unions either, although I don't know how relevant that is (I'm intrigued by the new releases, but not that intrigued).
I mounted this sucker up for carpet boarding and it feels FUN. Really sweet flex pattern. Burly in tips and tails, softer between the bindings. Backwoods is little more traditional directional: softer nose and progressively stiffer through the tail. Fucking around on it makes me a little sad that they don't make a 162 for everyday riding. We all know carpet boarding isn't the real thing, but had the most fun basement ollies I can ever remember popping hahaha.
HTH has SERIOUS camber. Looks like about 13 mm. The Backwoods actually has pretty healthy camber at like 6-7 mm, but this is Korua-esque old school camber. I don't actually know if I'll like that extreme amount of camber on a broken snowboard off-piste with metal bindings.
I'm probably giving up a bit of natural pow performance (mega camber, 12mm of taper vs 18mm, early rise on the Backwoods starts much earlier closer to front inserts), but I can slam back the inserts further on the HTH-- and may actually periodically change my stance with the channels. HTH is definitely going to be more fun in the air, more switch friendly. Probably easier foot steering in trees with the mellower middle flex.
Who knows, I feel good about it, hopefully I get a chance to actually ride it this year haha.
Re: Expensive Divorce - The Split Thread
Well, 7 days in on the new Japow split and I’m pretty impressed so far. First three days were stupid deep. Trenching deep. 70+cm of completely blower, choke on it kind of snow. Nothing much to be learned about a new deck in those conditions. Yup, it floats. Yup, it sends off stuff if ya straight line fast enough.
Day four brought wind and a bit of warming pattern. Snow settled down to 30+cm creamy powder that would spring back when ya pushed into it. That big ol’ nose sure likes to pop up out of the snow. Punched down a few nose heavy landings that would have me tomahawking on my other decks, but the Japow just popped up and I came out of grinning. Drops and double stacks over about 15’ felt squirrelly on the landings. Early season legs? Shorter tail than I’m used to?
The real moment things clicked was on a luge track run out at the end of the day. Fast slashes off the side to dump speed and double ups of the whoops, I couldn’t believe how playful the board felt for a 169. This thing is snappy more playful than I expected.

Oh yeah! Karakoram Ultraclips. This is the first deck I’ve had them on. Totally dig the solid cammed connection. But am always wary of small moving parts in snow and ice. The board lived outside for 9 days straight. Major rime buildup over night a few times. Several times I had to pull out a flat head screwdriver to wedge between the side wall and the ultra clip to get it moving in the morning. Will see how it goes. But I might end up back on the phantom Hercules clips.
