The whole notion of adjusting the stance for powder just does not compute, particularly since many boards either have some sort of early rise or taper anyway.
This 100%.
I have 3 solid decks. A what some people call "Directional Twin" ( no such thing exists, its a marketing term )
Pushing back on this. Directional twin, two variants. Twin shape, directional flex. Directional shape, nose and tail same stiffness i.e. twin flex. Full directional, usually just referred to as simply directional, is directional shape and flex. I think it’s a disservice to call all three of those “directional” as they are pretty different. We gotta describe stuff to differentiate it, how would you like to do that if not with “directional twin”?
it's pretty basic. A twin is identical. If the deck is not identical with a fully centered stance, then it's directional. For a long time though, any deck with the word Twin in its description sold better to the masses.
Companies can learn to do better messaging on decks with minimal taper and set-back, or directional flexes, etc, etc. Instead they are lazy and call it a Directional Twin.

Not sure about all brands, but I do know the at least Rome/Bataleon mini can. Union can’t for sure. Then as mentioned by someone else, Jones is full disc so what do they care? But yeah I’ve always found the pow inserts on boards drilled in 4x4 to be a bit dumb. Especially on something like the Stratos from Jones. Like what do you need a float pack for on a fully directional tapered board for?
i’ll pass that onto the jones test team. tell them they need to rider powder once in a while so jones don’t put out obsolete features that only cost more to produce. LOL
the only freeriding union bindings i can think of that don’t work with 4x4 is the falcor.
u right, Gigi & Arthur & Torstein & Iguchi could never freeride on the Ultra or Strata or Contact Pro. don't know how they ever stayed afloat in powder without FLOATER MAXIMIZER inserts on their boards, either
by the same token, they don’t ride with forward lean, so let’s not have forward lean on any bindings.
yes, people who ride ultra, strata or contact pro, most likely wouldn’t be the type of rider that would ever use the float pack. they would not likely ride a swallow tail’s either.
we should limit genders to only male and female….oops, that’s already a thing.

Why? There’s no rule that powder riding necessitates stiff freeride bindings. A lot of people enjoy the opposite. Especially on a swallow tail, which gives you a "surfy" feeling that’s further enhanced by a looser binding with more lateral mobility.

Maybe I'm missing something, but... you can ride whatever you want. Ride stiff bindings with a lot of forward lean. Ride soft bindings with none. Use reference. Set your stance back. Who the fuck cares. Preference is a broad spectrum. That's why products come in a wide array of options. Period. EL has been lame more often than not, lately.

Twin says the nose and tail are the same. Doesn’t necessarily specify in the term “twin” that it is referring to flex or shape. Tis’ the reason the term “true twin” existed/exists. To communicate both flex and shape in to one term. I don’t know you talk about needing better communication about shape and flex, a single 2 word term seems like a dang efficient way to do that. Lazy in the sense that brands never differentiate between twin shape dir flex and dir shape twin flex maybe, but directional twin seems like a perfectly adequate and effective term to me.
Agree to disagree I guess.

It all started with the Great Step On Battle of 2024. Something about saying “I don’t like this product” sends people into a frenzy lately.

that's what i love about surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding, is its openness to creativity. in the 70's when I used to ski, i hated the conformity. once i was able to make snowboards that rode on hardpack, i was so excited at a whole new exposure to the mountain. it was like a giant skate park.
all these sports go through a conformity stage, like snowboarding in the late 90's. but fortunately, it is back to being creative again (except for halfpipe comps).
