Might be too late @YukonCornelius but if you still got the option... just go. Japan is basically the easiest place for a Westerner to travel if you stick to major tourist destinations. You might not be able to hyperoptimize but you'll find a place to stay and be fine. I threw together a Niseko trip while in Tokyo on like 3-4 days notice. Had familiarity with Tokyo but no familiarity with Hokkaido flight, transit, lodgings, dining, etc, and just figured it out.

If not at least go somewhere, maybe Interior BC. Being locked down with two young kids and a postpartum wife, I am hyperaware of the opportunities I used to have to just piss off and go travel and ride on a whim. Just do it.

You have the added wrinkle of the locals assuming you speak Japanese because you look like them, but it's not that bad

If you got the time off and the funds, just do it. I think Japan is overhyped as a shred destination, but it's still an incredible and singularly unique cultural and culinary destination. Every snow-lover should go at least once.

not looking very likely right now. my buddy is working on getting his passport expedited so i don't have very high hopes at the moment.

I think this is my 4th time in Niseko. The last time was maybe 7-8 years ago. It’s over hyped now. Too many people, it’s on the verge of being over developed and they’re positioning it as upscale (although cheaper than US, AUS and NZ still. Equivalent to European resort entry).

Go elsewhere in Hokkaido if you’ve got a choice. Happy to DM other resorts, especially if you’ve got kids now. There’s still gems.
