Captians log...
Re: Captians log...
When we lived in Rochester we went to Swain a bit. My MIL lives pretty close to Bristol now and we keep threatening to take the kids there, coming from the PNW they would be so confused.

Rode Sunday up north.. full sun and 65. Didn’t pack accordingly and was shirtless under the bibs, wore a rugby polo over it. My nips were appropriately chafed.

Back from a little hiatus while traveling / trip report from Bachelor. Holy hell did I time that right! Snow, snow and more snow. Rode 25th-27th, and 29th-2nd, so overlapped the entire string of storms that came through. What a lovely place to ride storm days, quick, relatively simple drive from the city, and the storms stayed pretty isolated to the mountain, so it wasn't really sketchy apart from the last bit of the drive.
Mountain was everything that was advertised. Lots of terrain to play with, super flowy, relatively mellow...and very exposed/windy. Summit lift never opened, and there were sporadic closures throughout the day on the other lifts, but we only got jammed up bad once (about an hour line). Hard to not have fun when it dumps every day, but I see myself enjoying it in any case. I just like that kind of creative terrain, more than pushing technical skill on steeper stuff. I'd love to get back.

Bachelor is one of my favorites. I tend to love gnar factor and shit on flat resorts (Northstar in Tahoe, most of the I70 Colorado resorts) but Bachelor is an exception. Super featured, can just pop off shit like a skate park and don't have to worry about immediately hitting 40+ mph the moment you land in a steep pitch. Single peak with multiple base areas spreads crowds around but makes the place easy to navigate. They do a great job with park and grooming, super balanced resort. Only real complaint is Summit is super touch and go-- been there 3 separate trips, probably ~10 days lifetime, never even seen Summit run. Heard stories from locals and they said they might get a few laps a year.

Love bachelor. Such a fun place. I'm pretty sensitive to crowds, city vibe, and otherwise, but that place has a really good local feel, despite being a pretty popular mountain. Easy to get away from people if it's crowded - I was there on a bluebird Saturday after a big dump (2ft+ new), parking lot looked like the superbowl, and it didn't feel crowded to me, away from the obvious main lifts that everyone went to. I wasn't thinking about the summit & don't stress anything in general, but it did open for us one day. Really fun backside terrain off the top.
I was staying with my friend who lived on the other side of town, and the drive was still not much more than a half hour. Really easy to live close to the parking lot. Also experienced the weather effect noted above… snowy pow day on the mountain, sun in town.
This was 2016 - Bend had blown up before that & has only grown since, but still a big fan of that place. I went back in May and we were having beers at The Lot - next thing I know, Kevin Pearce is sitting right next to me chowing a taco, with Jake Price.
If I had to move based on snowboarding alone, it might be to Bend.

Kyle has been on the 203 for weeks. Mini park just opened, so we'll see what I can convince him to do, hah.

Some afternoon laps because work sucks and I’ve had enough of it for the week. Tried to make the best of the two runs that are left but doesn’t take a genius to see the season is all but finished in the immediate area. I’m going to have to go to Vermont if I really want to enjoy myself. Which is ok because I’ve still got a day left on my Ikon pass.
Oh well, it’s been a fun year. Hopefully I can get another worthwhile day in, if not, I had an absolute blast in Tahoe in early February. So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.
