Dupraz Snowboards

Post by unsatisfiedus »

picked up a 6' D1 in really good condition for not much. Says 178cm as well (which does not equal 6' - havent measure to see which, if either, is correct). it doesnt say anything else so i assume its standard construction.

pretty weird design. looks stance forward on sidecut? probably fun in powder in open bowls. dont know what else i'd do with it. looks like a halfday activity

the claim is that you can use them for anything, so might aswell try:p and ive seen those in the shop for 20 years looking exactly the same.

Yep. Low key annoys me off that a "6'" is actually 5'10".

Yep, stance is forward. Super fun in powder in open bowls.

I really enjoy carving it on wide open groomers. I'm a weekend warrior so I don't get a ton of those, and not many resorts in Tahoe have them anyway, usually better somewhere like Mammoth. I feel really comfortable on that board at higher speeds, the only board in my quiver I'd try to actually carve- rather than just redirect and steer --north of 40 mph.

That big nose is obviously a liability in tight spaces. I was once at Snowbird trying to set up heelside into a little mini-chute... the entrance was apparently narrower than 178 cm and I found myself suspended in mid air, only nose and tail supported by terrain curvature. I ended up popping 90 and making a spicier entry than I'd aimed for. It was the only solid I brought on that trip, @pow_hnd ended up lending me a Korua Transition Finder 57 when we met up a couple days later at Snowbasin and he led me into some tight aspen trees.

All in all, definitely a keeper. Go-to on deep pow days when I'm not expecting to be in trees or tighter chutes. I bring it out as a change of pace board sometimes for groomers. It's also one of the narrower boards in my quiver, so I prefer that on icier days as well.

hahaha. a lot riding on that pointy little tip of the nose.

it looks weird, kinda like a dog's boner, but feels pretty good underarm. looking forward to 20 years of occasional use.

it is narrow. i measure ~26.5cm at the front of the rear insert pack vs ~28cm for the shorty 164w.

Local buddy lets me borrow one of his (he has… several…) sometimes:

Enjoy!

data point: Dupraz and Korua are made at the same factory, Nobile in Poland.

On the Nobile point, one other minor complaint: their topsheets seem weak. I have a bunch of little scuffs on my D1 topsheet and my Koruas have a bunch of little cosmetic stress cracks that were more common circa 2008. Both glossy topsheets. Their boards seem well built-- I ran into a rock dead to rights riding out a 20-25 ft cliff drop and didn't even have a core shot --but their glossy topsheets could use work.

Both those boards were manufactured around 2018 to 2019, so that might be outdated beta.

Congrats on getting a D1! What colour is it? Depending on the year it could be a standard, + or ++ (those are the stiffnesses).

Yes, the stance is forward on the sidecut. I suggest you set up your bindings according to the markers on the topsheet to ride it as it was intended. Having the stance forward on the sidecut is unique and the advantages are quicker turn initiation and easier carving as it eliminates the need to move your weight forward and back in turns. Ride the D1 with your weight centered and turn with both legs together. You can move your weight from center to back through the turn of course. Guys, (like instructors) who have that front foot weighting riding style ingrained will complain that there's no effective edge in front of their front foot - but if you ride it centered you'll find there's plenty. This is a case of adjusting your style for the board for a new experience.

Where to use the 6'? Sure, open bowls are amazing. On pow days, it's great as its unsinkable, and faster than anything on hill (that's a problem if you're doing follow cams). And when things get tracked, you're not going to get bucked around like the guys on their volume shifted mini boards.
If you're hitting tight trees, moving down to a 5'5 would be the best best, as the D1 generates speed like crazy, which can get hairy in the woods. There are guys, though, who ride the 6' everyday in everything, and once you're used to the board it's easy to adapt.
Outside of powder, if you're into carving, then the D1 is the sh1t. There are only a few boards which have given me goose bumps from the first ride, and the 6' is one of them. If you're entering a banked slalom that's got a not-so-tight course, the D1 can be a secret weapon.

Hope that gives you some ideas!

lol was wondering when you'd show up 🤙

On the topic of D1 picking up speed... I SMOKED myself a couple years ago charging a ~20 foot jump at Palisades. I made 2 critical errors:

(1) My first lap through the park and I didn't inspect the features on a dry run... was feeling good and raring to go.
(2) I dropped from the same spot as the same place as the park rats, except I'm MUCH heavier than the typical park rat at 210 lbs/ 95 kg... AND I was riding the D1 6'.

I dropped without a speed check and I knew the moment I hit the lip that I was fucked. I had one of those rides with enough air time to observe and process sailing past the landing, and to ruminate on generally poor life decisions. I ended up going close to 35-40 feet and landing well into the flat. Miraculously I stayed composed in the air and landed on my feet, into an immediate controlled butt slide. I was lucky to walk away with just a bruised heel, easily could have blown out my knees or worse.

Anyway, D1 fast lol.
