Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
So, it’s the doldrums of summer (17 days of above 100° and counting in SLC. )
Time of year I start to needlessly buy shit or convince myself there’s shit I need ( when usually I don’t )
BUT. A new set of binders with a canted footbed seems kinda legit. It’s been quite a while since I’ve ridden a canted footbed and it was only at a demo.
My thought process is, I’ve already had a total knee replacement, and I know there’s gonna be a hip most likely in the next 5 years or so. Hoping that the canted beds will help the hips ( a little ) and help to keep my TKR from wearing out as quickly.
Who’s ridden some recently? Who’s ridden some with bad knees or hips and do they help? This isn’t for me much of a pain issue as more of a preventative measure I can take for the long haul. Or I could just be convincing myself to buy shit I don’t need because it’s the dead of summer in July.
Thoughts?

what's your typical stance? i know i'm risking a shitstorm starting down this road, but the ergonomics of turning with the back foot pointing backwards seem like a potential cause for longterm injury to me.

Re: Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
Hmm.. ridden a few pairs over the years.
Early 2010 Rome 390s - had different canted footbeds. I remember the “3.0” ones having an insane amount of canting, awful. The “1.5” was pretty nice, at the time I was riding a wide and ducked stance. Didn’t really notice anything comfort wise, but I liked the way it felt for ollies.
Malavitas - had the “autocant” that I actually really liked, it was just barely noticeable and this was when I went to 15/0 angles. Oddly enough it helped with my heel side turns and more comfort on my front knee
Union Forces - pretty mild, pair I had seemed to break down quickly (the canted part of the footbed squished to be pretty flat) and the canting was less noticeable.
This info might be pretty useless, but in your case I think it’s worth checking out. These days I do prefer some mild canting, seems to align my knees/hips better

Re: Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
I’ve tried a few. 390 boss, a union “mod” on older models (sliding a binding ladder under one side), autocant, and canted voile & spark pucks. I think I noticed more of a benefit back when I was riding duck and slightly wider stance, but less so when I narrowed down, and with forward angles. I don’t have knee issues, despite a torn MCL in 2011, but that was mild and has never given me issues. I think you’ll just have to try them, but you could be a good candidate. I’ve had friends with moderate knee issues who’ve found them to help, and others who haven’t, but there are a variety of factors.

22" 18/-9 Probably never gonna change. My "bad" knee is my front knee so where my back foot is doesn't really have any bearing on it. I've tried posi/posi and it just doesn't work for me.
This is what I'm hoping for.michaelangelo wrote: Fri Jul 29, 2022 1:36 pm These days I do prefer some mild canting, seems to align my knees/hips better
This is what I've heard as well or at least though I had, and what I'm hoping for.Spenser wrote: Fri Jul 29, 2022 7:07 pm . I’ve had friends with moderate knee issues who’ve found them to help
At this point I'm just hoping for prevenative measures as much as possible. The total knee replacement has been awesome, but it still is a total knee replacement and has its limitations and I know my hip is coming, while its not bad right now as a rule of thumb, I do have the occasional day where it's an issue all day long. This has gone from happening a few days a year to now a day or so every month.
I think I'm just gonna order the NOW pros with the canted footbeds and pop my Drive highbacks on them and see what they feel like and grab some Spark canted pucks as well. It can't hurt.

I can't remember who I heard it from, but it has helped alleviate some of my knee pain. Granted I have never had a knee injury or tear yet. Besides the usual ibuprofen (take days off obviously) and glucosamine, I have had good luck by physically rubbing my knees. It helps circulate blood flow and if you are into the hippy stuff it is "healing hands"
No real scientific evidence behind it, but it has helped when my knees feel extra achy. If nothing else, what is the first thing you do when you hurt yourself? Well besides cursing you probably put your hand on the site of the injury

Re: Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
I've been riding canted since before they made them: In the late 80's we'd stick a piece of wood in the binding to cant the back foot. When Burton started selling cant plates, I always had them.
All my bindings today are canted. Burton Cartel, Genesis X, Spark canted pucks… except the Now Drives, which I do notice but more in terms of general comfort.
Nothing to do with "bad" knees here (though I do have those now too), just my preferred stance for riding. Posi posi, tucked knee.

Re: Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
Saw an old photo of Chris Roach with just a cant plate under his rear foot, so i have been doing that for a minute now, just canting the rear foot. Even bought the spark cants, just for that one foot. That is why I mainly ride Rome and Burton for the parts bin to pull this off, I see Now stepping up its parts bin, and selling cant beds
to dead inside to live, to tough to die
Re: Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
Canting should be just an accessory with soft boots, not the rule. If your stance is too wide, you will fuck up your knees in the end. On stiffer boards/lotsa camber it can help bending the board, but that seems to be it, for me at least.
Re: Canted footbeds? Who’s ridden.
@pow_hnd I would study your footprint before. My rear foot pronates a bit and that causes problems in my knee and if I incline more with autocant it could be a bigger mistake for my knees. I have never tried autocant but I have experience with injuries from inclined shoes and now I only use neutral things. Maybe your foot is neutral and you don't have problem but think about it first as a precaution
