The Mittens Thread

Post by bboytommy »

Alright "snowboarders of the internet'"! Ya boy is looking for some mittens with cuffs that'll keep my poorly circulated fingers warm.

Just blew the seams on my Dakine Baron that I've had and loved for 6 seasons. They're solid in ~30s F temp, but I usually have to throw in hand warmers for ~20s F.

What mittens (no not gloves) are you rocking? Any recommendations? Or would ya'll suggest adding a liner like the Hestra mitten liner and grabbing a new pair of Dakines?

Hestra fall line 3 finger is pretty good, and I have these Hestra hunting/biathlon fingerless gloves with a hoodie, nice for surfing forums/tinder on the chairlift.

I ride a liner (like the dakine or B) + full leather insulated mitten (flylow/kinko)

In coldest conditions it keeps me warm. Can take mitten off without losing all my hand heat.

In normal conditions I can run just the mitten.

In warm I can run the liner.

Dakine & candygrind make decent options. Obviously Hestra if you're a taller baller shot caller.

Again I prefer full leather. But at minimum a full grain palm. Anything else seems to die on a tow rope in a day.

Pow Stealth GTX that have lasted me for like a decade. Then I snagged a pair of Black Diamond Session mitts to try out this season. No liners, never needed them.

When you say cuffs are you looking at a gauntlet style that go over your jacket? I have a couple of bodies that swear by Outdoor research for those. One thing I don't get is why so many mittens (looking at you Kinco) have glove liners instead of open mittens.

Gauntlet style, but I’ve really liked my Volcom 91 Goretex mitts. Got them for 60% off during one of their sales last year (thanks Nate).

I swap between those and [AK] Leather Tech mitt depending on conditions. If it’s super cold, I have a pair of the Howl Down mitts that end up being too warm usually.

I have a friend with bad circulation and he’s been rocking the B oven mitt for a few seasons and loves them.

Image I only wear leather mittens and really like my Volcom Gore mittens since they are low profile and my hands stay dry even when the leather is wet.

If you want Hestra (the best IMO) but a bit cheaper try Hestra Job if you can get them where you are. They have a workwear line with some burly options that are cheaper (and less white) than the ski ones: https://www.hestrajob.eu/area-of-use/winter

Or from the regular line there are these which are oddly affordable for a full leather Hestra mitt. I buy on average two pairs of these per year for my girlfriend as she has a habit of losing them: https://www.hestragloves.dk/leather-box-mitt-black
