I have 3 solid decks. A what some people call "Directional Twin" ( no such thing exists, its a marketing term ) , that I call just a standard directional deck, a bit of taper ( 5mm ), just a bit of setback ( 15mm ) that is my Brighton Daily Driver, even on big pow days, a high speed charger with a bit of taper that can do it all for Snowbird and Snowbasin, and then a deck with 30mm of taper for cat/heli days ( or maybe the random storm where Brighton gets like 60in in 3 days ) If I'm on the right deck on the right day, i.e. Swell ( 30mm taper ) at Baldface it's no problem to ride it in reference stance and not in the back seat and have it ride perfectly well. Absolutely no moving the bindings. I mount them at reference and leave therm there. My personal opinion is that reference is gonna get the most out of the deck, where it was designed to have the bindings mounted with its geometry.

jones doesn’t call it float pack because that’s the ideal position for hardpack

but do people actually use those inserts? anyone running bindings that use mini-discs actually can't use them, either.

i don't know...i should ask jeremy jone. BTW: jones bindings don't have mini disc.

my question is, do you think a rider would switch between the reference stance and the float pack, depending on whether they are riding powder or harpack at a resort? if the board that they brought allowed them to in an instant, toollless and no removing or loosening screws.

Pushing back on this. Directional twin, two variants. Twin shape, directional flex. Directional shape, nose and tail same stiffness i.e. twin flex. Full directional, usually just referred to as simply directional, is directional shape and flex. I think it’s a disservice to call all three of those “directional” as they are pretty different. We gotta describe stuff to differentiate it, how would you like to do that if not with “directional twin”?

Not sure about all brands, but I do know the at least Rome/Bataleon mini can. Union can’t for sure. Then as mentioned by someone else, Jones is full disc so what do they care? But yeah I’ve always found the pow inserts on boards drilled in 4x4 to be a bit dumb. Especially on something like the Stratos from Jones. Like what do you need a float pack for on a fully directional tapered board for?

powder inserts are stupid whether you’re united shapes or jones

That whole idea is just a leftover relic from when companies almost exclusively made twins and people had to do whatever they could to get setback on board.

u right, Gigi & Arthur & Torstein & Iguchi could never freeride on the Ultra or Strata or Contact Pro. don't know how they ever stayed afloat in powder without FLOATER MAXIMIZER inserts on their boards, either
