Apologies, it wasn’t my intention to start an argument. As a newcomer here I appreciate you have settled into a way of communicating with each other and I should be better at deciding when and more importantly when not to post what I am really thinking.

Just to clarify, when I say the West I mean North America and Europe, not the West coast of the United States. I didn’t mean to caricature anyone or their scene.

I agree that cultural appropriation sounded harsh and of course Japan appropriated all board sports (and many other things) from the US. This is not necessarily a bad thing at all, obviously we need to be open to outside influences in order to learn. I think people can be spooked by the term as it suggests something really negative or exploitative.

Nicholas Wolken on starting Korua Shapes: “I think what really kicked it off was one of the trips we did to Japan,” Wolken says. “We didn’t just witness different snowboards, but a whole scene and culture. A different approach to snowboarding. “We didn’t invent that,” Wolken stresses, “I want to credit those guys over there but we saw that it was possible in Japan, and it seemed there was nothing like it in Europe.”

It’s about respect.

This 100%..

Just don't do something that's been done before and say you came up with it, it as simple as that... Feel free to say things like we're introduction a new design/shape/construction...

Then don't start POW, then go build your boards in the dessert and then, stand up on a pedestal and preach...

As stated, much of his ire is fully self inflicted.

No argument, just a lively, respectful public discourse, with some strong opinions which is healthy and you can't get on DMQ or snowboardingforum...

It's all good... 🤙

All good dude, this isn't an argument and there are no hard feelings haha. Just a fun discussion.

I do think you're missing the point, though, that the "surfing" mindset in snowboarding originates from the west coast of the US plain and simple. It was surfers and skaters in the mecca of surfing and skating at the time who willed it into existence because they literally wanted to surf the snow. In Japan, that "surf" influence may have taken over their scene more rapidly, but that doesn't mean that the people out west who created it were suddenly "appropriating" anything.

I hear you that it comes from the west coast without a doubt. I moved to SF when I was young because it was the home of skateboarding. I think those specifically American or even Californian ideas from that genesis era like dropping out of straight society, anti-establishment youth, individual freedom and self realisation were what made it so attractive to people in a traditional and conservative place like Japan.

That said, there are things specific to broader Japanese society and culture like a reverence for hand crafted objects, respect for age and experience, spending one’s life micro-improving tasks and movements, a spiritual relationship to nature and enjoying the beauty of simple things done well that have shaped how snowboarding has developed there.

Perhaps snowsurf is a misnomer as it’s not totally about trying to emulate surfing but a mindset with which to approach snowboarding. I think elements of that Japanese approach have been really influential on snowboarding in Europe and North America in the last 5-10 years and I’m glad for it. Particularly in my 40s where I still skate but am for sure getting worse at it. The idea that I can constantly improve in small ways at turning a snowboard or understanding terrain and perhaps actually be better at it ten years from now is very cool.

Winterstick made the first good snowsurfboards in Utah, Moss Snowsticks took it further in Japan, and Regis Rolland showed everyone how to do it.

Yeah! Who's holding!? I need to decide if I'm getting this year's free thinker or next.

Just offering some thoughts..

Anytime they release new tech, like any good sales guy there’s an origin story. Usually involving some problem with the current tech in the company, of which they have a new solution to with “insert cool name here that may or may not already exist in the marketplace”

I can’t fault them for basic marketing.. and I haven’t heard the claims that they’ve invented technology that’s being used by other companies, but they’ve come up with their own take on said tech and that’s the invention. It’s important to be specific, it’s hard to prove it was stolen. Especially through old wives tales about borrowing a gentem and never giving it back(not saying I don’t believe it).

Also DOES ANYONE HAVE PHOTOS OF NEXT YEARS SHIT YET?!
