I've never felt that at all, in any union, but your background makes sense. Whenever I've ridden bindings that are supposed to allow "natural board flex" and have minimal topsheet contact, I feel loose to the point of feeling like I don't know how to snowboard at times
On the other hand, I tried a pair of flux SF45 I think, 2011, and I felt absolutely concreted in, as you say. Also felt that with a pair of ride betas around the same time. No good.
One of my favorite things about now drives is the taller heelcup that really hugs the heel & lower ankle, but I don't feel restricted at all
Strangely enough, I loved my Select Pros because they felt supportive but didn't give me the Union locked-in heel feeling. My Romes and Bataleons didn't either, despite having metal heelcups. I noticed they had a decent amount of lateral flex where the heelcup met the baseplate. But yeah, I'm a big fan of Shadowfit if that tells you anything haha.

I'm backing the new Falcor, I think they look rad, kind of a beefed up version of the Ultra with the new base plate.
I’ve been riding the Ultra for two seasons now and it’s my fave Union binding ( I do have the new Force as well which I like ). Never had an issue with the mini disc at all, and I can’t think of a better endorsement of a product than watching what Rice at 190lbs puts them through.
I try not to get too influenced by pros. Rice has also put his name on some very meh Quik signature outerwear (although maybe the new Goretex Pro stuff is better). He rode the notoriously awful first year Union Expedition split binding into the Teton backcountry in Roadless a few years back. He also gets infinite replacement gear from sponsors if he breaks shit.
I haven’t ridden a Union in well over a decade, since back when you and I were swapping parts for multi-color franken-binders. I had issues with the adjustable heelcups always slipping on me. The new Force has my interest piqued though.
I just hate how locked in and rigid my heels feel in Unions. I get that people love that, but they make me feel I’m along for the ride and can’t make corrections or micro adjustments. Landed backseat? Hit an awkward patch of snow? Wanna poke out a slash? Too bad, heels are concreted in haha. Even other metal bindings like Romes don’t feel like Unions do. I think this is partly because of my skate and surf background.
I’ve never felt that way and grew up surfing and skating my whole life. Crazy how subjective hard goods are. What bindings do you run?

Holograms are my daily drivers right now. I love the lateral flex. Also have some Bataleon Blaster Asyms that are pretty tweakable. Had Select Pros and Katanas last season and loved them both. Cartels are always in the rotation, too.

i have been on contact pros for years because of the "loose" feel for slashing and tweaking. xD
rode some flux and forces a few years back and they gave me the to locked in feel.

I love the Rome heelcup. It’s tall and supportive and drives a lot of power to the edges but is flexy side to side. Most other metal heelcups I’ve seen are thick and stiff in every direction but Rome are made of thin metal so it’s stiff in one direction and flexible in the other.

Yep, exactly. That’s always my ideal binding: responsive heel to toe and flexible laterally.

if I were to jump ship from the Union train, it would most likely be to Holograms or Highlanders. those were the only bindings I really felt the benefits of + enjoyed that feeling when demoing new setups. i forget if you’ve tried Strata’s or the new Ultras? similar feel to the Shadowfit for me.
or Step On, I’ve done three days so far in DC Judge SO’s w/ B’s bindings, and I don’t hate it. biggest negative for me is sizing (had to go up to 11’s/L bindings to not be cramped in the toes) and there being some play in my high back/heelcup interface. doesn’t really effect the ride, but I notice it a ton when traversing/skating around. but my setup was also a warranty bin rescue w/ standard Mission footbeds franked i place of missing StepOn footbeds that aren’t a perfect fit.

Have you tried the Photon SO wides? Decent amount off room in the toe box.

i might try them on? not really interested investing too much into this setup, and Burton’s in general don’t agree with my feet. i’m also pretty sure the stepon wides have just been thinned out inside the toebox, since the shell has to be a set width to fit the cleats.
