This has been wild to follow. Very sad with one death Wednesday...they had a second slide yesterday, that I believe no one was caught in. Never risk free, but two in a row is a tough look.

I rode Palisades solo yesterday, 2 days after the avalanche incident. Spent that day following the news in horror and texting a few friends to make sure no one I know was caught.

I rolled up to the village about 15 minutes before open and noticed they were spinning KT-22. Didn't expect it, the Operations blog announced the incident took out all the cat roads and it wasn't on schedule when I checked before leaving the house (albeit at 4 am). No announcement, just an understandably low-key reopening.

I jumped in line. My wife wouldn't be stoked on my decision, but rationally I know getting caught in an inbounds slide is extraordinarily unlikely and I expected Ops would be ESPECIALLY conservative with that lift on that day. Mostly I wanted to ride untouched snow, partly I was confronting my lingering lizard-brain fear, and small piece (fuck this is pretentious) was personal tribute to the fallen. RIP Kenneth Kidd.

Maybe I'm projecting, but vibe in line was real subdued. KT usually has a hyped party atmosphere on a day worth lining up, but folks were quiet. Could have been any of us. A patroller swung through the line and thanked us for coming, and warned to ride safe and control speed because of the amount of debris. Ominously I caught the 13th chair up.

The avy crown was RIGHT the top of the lift. A lot to take in. Bunch of non-incident related debris around the slope too, they bombed the everloving crap out of that zone. The new cat road cut through the incident slide path and debris field multiple times. Can't imagine what was going through that particular cat driver's mind.

The riding was surprisingly good; wind compacted, bit heavy but rode great. B+ conditions. Light sucked and enough unexpected debris fields that I kept speed in check. Got some great turns and a couple face shots. Took 4 laps before hitting other parts of the resort. Unexpected gift from Ullr. Snowboarding is fun.

I normally ride pow days with avy gear, and didn't have it yesterday. I didn't expect KT to reopen so soon and figured everything else would be tracked out. While loading up at home I very explicitly looked at my packed avy vest and decided not worth making another trip between house and car. Didn't stop me and I'll (hopefully) never need that gear, but I need to develop some better protocols around that.

Wow, great summary @kimchi, felt like I was reading a novel or something 😅. Felt like I was there with you.

Location of slide is wild. The amount of times I absolutely barged that run as a child without a care in the world with regard to conditions is crazy. I feel like this one is on management :(

Easy to Monday morning quarterback things and we don’t have any details… but inbounds slides on consecutive days is not a great look.

And yea, location was wild. Top of crown is literally directly below the top of the lift. Every single skier and rider got a clean look at it every lap off KT. Last KT run of the day my legs were cooked and I rode the cat track most the way down— I switched back through the slide path a bunch. Surreal to see.

I’m currently debating how to tackle the next few days. We’ve got two days left on our ikon passes. We’re staying at Tahoe city and leaving out Wednesday. My initial thought was to hit homewood tomorrow and then palisades/alpine Monday Tuesday. Also thought about using the ikon days Sunday Monday and then going over to Sugarbowl on Tuesday. Any advice for someone in a rental suv without snow tires? Haha. Thanks!
