I'm not a fan, but I run really warm. I've also had weird instances where the fit feels off in certain movements because of the additional tension on the wrist gaiters... which I've only seen companies deal with by having extra long sleeves which is a different kind of annoyance.

I don't dislike them enough to cut them out when a jacket has them, but they're not a must-have for me and I have a slight preference against.

I have been through many phases of outerwear geekdom but now I just go for a basic kit that is super comfortable and makes me excited to ride. I like looking at the 800 dollar coats but I cant see myself buying one

I've had jackets with them, my current jackets don't have them and I don't miss them at all. I don't ever remember thinking to myself over the past few seasons that my wrists were getting particularly wet or cold or anything. But I never actually put my thumbs in the provided holes, I definitely didn't like the extra material in my mitts, I always just jammed the gaiter up against the mitt.

What I *do* like is the AK457 style thumb loops that go over your mitts/gloves. Those actually work to keep the sleeves from riding up. So I guess I'm against normal gaiters because that means the jacket probably won't have the over the mitts sleeve holder down loops.

Same here for the most part. I hate how they feel inside my gloves. I always cut them out. I like how the Volcom velcro adjusters can go around your thumb in a lot of cases. Older Analog jackets had a stretchy thumb loop. I've never really had a problem with snow getting up my sleeves to any degree.

I have this mental problem with outerwear where I cant really get excited about it unless it looks like late 90s/y2k special blend cargo type stuff even though the new thin gore stuff is so much easier to ride in

I think it was technically late 00's where mine came from (think Stevie Bell days) but I've still got my SB pants and jacket from then. Red pants and a brainbow plaid jacket. Shit is so gangster fit it's hilarious. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd find a pair of pants that was long enough to be baggy on my 6'6" sasquatch self, even with the waist at appropriate height. And if that's not baggy enough, they come with a built-in pow "skirt" that extends up like 6-8" and looks like underwear so you can actually sag them and still be "protected ".

I still have my Joni Malmi SB kit that i first saw in Forum Or Against Em (or maybe it was First Chair Last Call). Bright yellow striped puffy jacket and baggy ass pants. Definitely swimming in it by today's standards haha.

While Volcom makes good products, and for resort riding it is great, I feel Burton AK is superior when it comes to splitboarding. The Volcom stuff doesn’t breathe as well, the vents are not as useful and it’s heavier.

I will say that theoretically it could be a bit more durable, due to the heavier fabric and Tricot backing, but when it comes to breathability and light weight, AK is superior. I’ve owned both them through the paces.

As for a pure snowboard brand, it is the second best stuff on the market. The Volcom GPT and Burton AK ( especially AK457 ) is worlds above all other pure snowboarding brands, and if I was only bumping chairs with a day or two a year of splitboarding I’d be plenty happy with the Volcom stuff.

I will say, as for my experience, the best splitboarding kit out there, from a pure snowboard brand is Burton AK Tusk bibs and the Burton AK Japan Guide jacket. I’ve owned all 3L pieces they make and the Volcom 3L stuff and that combo just rules. The Tusk bibs with the full zip down hips and thigh vents has superior venting, the built in beacon pocket and reinforced lanyard attachment points can’t be beat. The Japan Guide jacket vents like crazy as well. The radio pocket is tits, and the powder grip cuffs are the best when it comes to the sleeves and keeping you snow free when you fall, reach down in the snow or just reach out for something, but they’re not as restrictive as a wrist gaiter and they fold out of the way if you don’t want to use them and you don’t even know they are there.
