In fairness, Burton released the DoubleTake ladders without realizing the bigger slanted teeth would be a problem. A buddy and I tried for like 2 or 3 days to figure out a way to pull the ladders out of the baseplate of a set of first gen Hitchhikers, and ultimately we had to just cut them out. The replacements Burton sent had the little removable stopped to pull them out of the top.

To the karakoram riders (particularly those on the free ranger), have you guys ever had any issues with the screw in the highback messing up your boot? I used it for the first time last year on a 2 week trip to NZ and it chewed up the spine of my boot.

Sent some photos of the highback/screw to karakoram and they said everything looked normal. I'm considering swapping it out the highback for an Atlas high back (if it fits?!).

Anyone else have advice or run into this issue?

Send them a pic of the boots and ask if that's normal for their bindings too

So I’m really impressed with the Ultras. If they had the highback and straps of the Stratas, Union could have a winner there. The original highback doesn’t handle turns, but it might be fine for jibbing, Strata highback was perfect for it. The straps were kinda opposite from what I want (and the Stratas), soft on the lateral and stiff on the medial side. Maybe they should just make two options.

Glad you posted that, it’ll save me from buying every damn union binding they drop 😩.

Yeah i actually did...they replied that they had never seen that before. Which leaves me wondering if i'm misusing these bindings somehow? I even tightened the screw on the highback that connects to the FLAD but i still think it was scratching my boot up.

I'm wondering now if I'm better off just replacing the highback with something that doesn't have a screw in that area.

But yeah, I'm hoping someone using karakoram bindings here can comment if it's happened to them too so I know it's not just me.

Never noticed anything on my Connect Rs (predecessor to Free Ranger), but have worried about the same. I haven't ridden them a ton (probably like ~10 days total) but that sounds about in line with what you'd expect out of a 2 week trip.

No issues with my Karakoram highbacks (straightline) - boots have been fine in them
