Yea this basically about covers it. Signal to noise is just awful. Theoretically I'm in a position to try to make the discourse a little more sophisticated... but people are just so fucking dumb lol. I guess I'm just wondering how much time and capital I expend trying to course correct, versus just trying to keep it civil and on point until I can find someone willing to take the reins.

Help me understand the mod thing. Because it seems like it could be a full time job for some subs, and in some sense seems to carry some power and prestige, but... it's all volunteered time? Or is there a way it compensates and could be a legit job? How come there can't be like 10-20 mods?

As far as r/snowboarding, the volume of participants means that by sheer number there's going to be an overwhelming amount of garbage posts and comments.

One thing I really enjoy about EZL is that anyone here really wants to be here. I do miss a lot of the old heads. It would be nice to have more activity. But what do you expect when the site goes tits up every 3 years.

Thanks for this, dude! Random thoughts:
  • Powder Racer graphic is sick. Everyone needs to try that board, it's one of my favorites.
  • Outerspace Living graphic is also sick.
  • Super weird they gave the Navi the Resort V2 profile from the Mercury. It's like they want to blur the lines between all their boards. The directional profile it has this year really set it apart from any of their other non-Spring Break boards.
  • So, the Scott Stevens pro model is gone? But it stayed for kids? Weird.
  • I know this is the dumbest gripe ever, but Union's heelcups look like shit after your first day of riding and I wish they'd fixed that somehow haha.
Navi gets the Merc camber as its designed as a resort pow board. We had camber to the tail, like Kazu's and it fights against the nose floating so we loosened it up. It works.
Scott had a model for 10 years, perfect board to end a run on. He rides a ton of other boards as well and there's more value in having Scott promote a series that appeals to more people, that he rides, than pigeonhole him in a model.
My heelcups look like shit when just tossed into the box on top of the rig and flop all over. I can see it as a gripe, me I don't care.
And Blaises color way is just that, a color way nod to the gentleman that refuses to age while riding shaped boards. Spring Break boards.

People really are just so fucking dumb. This new era of hand holding we’re in is something I can’t stand. Nobody is willing to try the most basic of things on their own or get their hands dirty.

Reddit is a complete circle jerk. It’s like a bad therapist that just sits there and affirms everyone’s fucked up minds because nobody wants to offend anyone or be guilty of wrongthink. SBF is just as bad: “should I ptex this?!” oh I dunno, how about you buy a stick of it and learn to not be worthless? “Is this too much overhang?” oh I dunno, how about you learn to fucking carve before you stress out over booting out. “Is this delaminating?” oh I dunno, do you have eyes that can see? “What’s wrong with DOPE?!” “I started last spring, what size mega Merc should I get?” etc etc.

Okay, rant over. Hallelujah for ezlounging.

Fully volunteered time. Limited power, no prestige, just getting shat on by entitled twats pissed off I removed their living room picture of an Orca lol.

I actually have friends who worked at Reddit, and there is some internal voices calling for mods to get paid. But yea, basically it's volunteered work to pump up their fucking engagement numbers.

/r/snowboarding actually has like 9 mods, but 6 of those are completely checked out (but we can't remove them because they're ahead of us on mod "priority"), 1 is a light contributor. Me and one other dude are doing lion's share of a work. The guy who recruited me quit because he realized it was bullshit deal lol.

Yea, I don't really have any hope of reducing the number of dumbass posts... I guess I wonder if I can meaningful adjust that ratio by elevating good content. I could probably hustle to get some industry AMAs and the like, but I don't even know if anyone would notice.

Or if I should even fucking bother. The only thing I really get out of any of this is a chance to be a good steward for snowboarding and the satisfaction of making that shitty little corner of the internet a little less shit. Curiosity made me sign up, disillusionment made me quit, the realization that my replacement was a pointedly SHITTY steward of snowboarding made me come back lol.

Interesting. IMO it floated nicely and its profile let it carve really well still. It was definitely unique in the lineup and bridged the gap between the all mountain boards and the spring break series.

Honestly, it's pretty fucking wild how useless the internet has made people lol. Both in how much people feel the need to check stuff out before just trying things, and how a flood of SEO-optimized content has fucking ruined the incentive to create actually insightful original content, instead of shit that just has the right keywords and fucking filler to extend read times.

My wife had some friends over recently and they were talking about parenting and shit. My generation fucking researches everything and over optimizes. My wife more than the most. My boomer parents just played shit fast and loose because there were no resources to check against. Same thing with early snowboarders, no one had any resources to check and you can't really cave a fucking 140 cm Burton Backhill, but didn't stop people from trying lol.

So true. That’s probably why there are so many terrible riders on the hill now, too… I mean I obviously love gear, sometimes even obsess over it, but that’s because I’ve ridden long enough to appreciate it… all the little nuances are fun. I see kids on Orcas and carbon Atlases now that can’t even carve or butter because they’re worried about status in lieu of riding. I’m 34 now and 20 years ago I just ‘member seeing so many good riders around places like Breck and Keystone that are seemingly disappearing.

And through the lovely world of "internet snowboarders," there are folks genuinely arguing that this is definitely carving. This one really hurt my brain.

I try to compartmentalize, but seeing the state of the average rider in Tahoe bums me out. I take note any time I see someone who has properly stacked weight and can drive a carve off the front foot, which is maybe a handful of time times a day, even if I'm cruising around on weekdays with locals.

Things are just diluted. I know lots of people who like to snowboard, but I know very few people who live and breathe it the way I do, think about it as much I do, AND CAN actually ride. The core's been diluted as snowboarding found scale. The number of posts I responding to from kooks trying to decide whether they should buy a Mountain Twin or a Mercury or a Custom when they probably can't tell the difference is maddening. You give 5 rippers 10 different boards, and each one might have a different favorite. Snowboard recommendations and reviews are only meaningful in the face of context, and if you don't have context, you might as well just fucking pick something and ride.
