I got the G3 poles last winter sofar I like them better than the compactors Ihad before. Only time will tell about longevity

2.0 indeed. came from a standard Macon, don't notice a ton other than being lightweight, and knowing MIPS is there is nice.

hyped to get back on the Taka again. going up to a 61 for a touch more stability, the 58 was super fun in any fresh snow, less confident in mixed conditions.

Why the switch from the Wolverine poles?

They were quite honestly, terrible

They are sexy AF (AF!) but 100% made for very specific type of … I almost want to say person?
Joey had an idea of what he wanted/needed, and he made it. Cool. There may well be others whom these poles work for… but I too am not one of them.
(To add insult to injury, when I ordered them last year in November, there was nowhere any indication of shipping method and cost until after the order went through. Shipping to Japan cost *as much as the poles* and I got them in like March. When I wrote in after ordering, Joey was like "we ship by regular post because that's cheapest"… oookay… ).

But here's the thing: the Wolverines use the same (excellent) clips from Komperdell that the Jones Talons have. And I have come to very much appreciate the Talon's (also Komperdell tech) swivelling basket. It's not a standard attachment unfortunately, but everything else about those poles more than makes up for that. Full aluminum, very comfortable grip head, with a lip for dropping and raising split binding risers. (The Wolverine grips heads are an *abomination*: sharp edges, and the aluminum has no give so trying to do the binding risers was an exercise in frustration as they would just slip by.)

Also, those Wolverine paws? Don't believe the hype. Aside from the fact that yes they do clip together very nicely (nothing Jones can't copy next year if they want), the material is soft, so when you put any weight on them, they don't hold. Sometimes, when you teeter a bit, it's good to be able to rely on the pole not giving way. The regular size were useless in japanese powder, and the large don't compact so well so what was the point here again?)

So I got a brand new pair of the Talons for 99€ this summer.

(I don't put poles in the pack, so I don't need them to be crazy short enough to risk using collapsibles. The Jones get down to 61m, which is reasonable for my setup. The Wolverines go to 67cm, and that was actually too long.)

I don't quite understand why there's no wrist / hand strap. So useful. What advantage would deleting that be?

seeing your pics riding the tips up makes me nervous. I'd rather get a tip in the leg than in the back of my neck/head.

I've stowed my poles outside my pack just like that for 25+ years with never an issue

The theory is that backcountry poles shouldn't have straps so you have one less thing to get tangled in if you get caught in an avalanche on the way up. After hiking this summer a bunch with straps I am seriously considering putting mine back on though.

Tips up is the only way.

I've never got stabbed by my poles, but I've never been in an avy either. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it makes me uncomfortable none the less.

I've never got stabbed by my poles, but I've never been in an avy either. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it makes me uncomfortable none the less.

Over thinking it for sure, it would so damn hard for those tips to get to my head. I’ve done high speed tomahawks and cartwheels, along with serious butt checks with never an issue.

that fear is why BD still makes compactor pole
