I like the tech, only 2 reasons holding me back is I like soft boots and want to only travel with one set of bindings for my trips that have my split with me

I have used swath because I no longer like hard boots and I have even used them very loose… but with j-bars to keep my heel down

I think its really about boot fit. I found a better connection from Step Ons than straps, but boot fit is even more important with this setup as you cant use straps to bandaid fit issues.
My feet suck and need that ankle strap to be locked in. The biggest reason SO won't work for me.

This is the 2nd biggest reason I don't think they would jive with me.

If money isn't a concern, I'd give the Waverange X Pro boots a try on. My feet suck too, and I've never had heel lock from a boot before like these. They may be too soft for me though... which sounds right up your alley.

Give the Waverange X Pro boots a try at a shop next season. They are super expensive though, so totally up to you, but they are really soft and premium boots.

I know a guy who owns a few boards and a split. He actually switched to StepOn in resort a couple of years back and this season he bought a StepOn splitboard binding. He said he actually prefers the StepOn splitboard binding to his Spark Arc Pro that he rode for the last five years. It could be boot fit, but he said that the StepOn split felt better on the down.

When he travels, he uses the Spark R&D Solid Board Pucks on his non-split so he only needs to take one set of bindings and the two boards.

That is proper break testing. Done something similar in Sparks, didn't break. Not with a plankship though, so the board probably took a good part of the impact.

The heel cleat just straight up has vertical play in it. Clearly enough to shear the screw that attaches it to the boot straight off on hard landings haha. I never broke mine, but I could definitely feel said play just riding around.

This didn't shear the screw off. The cleat actually ripped off the back of the boot completely. Boot and all.

Yeah, zooming in it looks like the screw actually stayed in the boot and the cleat broke around it (the pant clip is still hanging there and uses the same screw). Either way, the main mechanism that holds you in broke off completely. Obviously not every rider cruising groomers will encounter that, but I'm not reaching for them on a pow or park day, personally.
