Captians log...

They’ll put you in a better mood when you shred ‘em, so pull up a chair and talk about ‘em

Took the Gentemstick Stingray and Burton Fish 3D, both were great, I would have been fine with the Gentem for this trip, for steep terrain like where I rode, cambered directional board will be more than fun here. On flatter terrain (like where I live) I'd pick the Fish.
Word! Sounds like a great trip. Yea, Fish 3D feels undergunned for a place like Snowbird. 3 or 4 years ago I took a US Cadet 162 and a Moss PQ54 up to Jackson. The PQ54 was AMAZING in the fresh, but one things started getting tracked and chopped, I just wanted more board. It was rideable, but burlier flex of the Cadet was much more manageable.
benjinyc wrote: Tue Dec 13, 2022 9:28 pm sadly, a skier passed away at Solitude, his body was found this morning in some trees. I had a beacon on me for this trip, ever since the accident a few years ago in Taos (I was there the week of), I'll have that on me anytime there's been a decent storm. Most of my trips have been solo, so kinda processing this one since this guy was out alone too
I wear a beacon, but most my buddies do not tour so don't even own beacons. I also ride solo a fair bit. So the value of an in-bounds beacon for me is honestly problem in body retrieval in a bad scenario. Maybe I'd get lucky, when I go into search mode in lift lines I do pick up multiple other signals. I just wear it as a best practice with a full avy kit in case I ever get pulled into an inbounds rescue scenario. Especially since I picked up a WhatVest, I don't mind the extra weight of carrying my kit inbounds. Edit: Although inbounds I carry a SnowClaw instead of a full shovel.

Day 1. 3 consecutive years of late Fall/early Winter injuries, surgeries, and to a much lesser extent, life circumstances have definitely altered me from a (quasi) snowboarder, to someone who (barely) snowboards. Hoping to get things back on track this year. Day 1 at Mammoth, post storm. Totally decent packed powder groomers, some mellow side hits, and hiked a couple hundred feet of someone else's boot pack to get 4 actual turns of side-ish country untouched 3 day old pow, just to say I made some powder turns on day 1. Ran into Zeb Powell at the end of the day and had a brief but fun exchange about being from the same home town. Fun day to kick things off.

Day 1: No matter what, every year before my first ride, I always get a nervous feeling like I've completely forgotten how. I have these thoughts like, maybe I'm not going to be good. Maybe I have all this gear and spend all this time thinking about this and I'm just a poser. Maybe I've lost my nerve and won't want to push myself anymore.

And then I get going and completely lose myself in the feeling of turns, and jumps, side hits and pushing myself and realize, no, I do know how to ride and I'm not too old yet, this is the most fun I ever have.

Even on a training bra of a hill. So, I guess what I'm saying is I got to ride yesterday.

I have the same dark thoughts especially before the season starts, sometimes also during the season. It's a thin line between joy and disaster.

I was staring at the big kicker in the park I was like... do I know how to hit that? And then I hit it and I was like, oh yeah, I do. It's like I go so long in between riding from the end of season to the next that I become just nervous that somehow I forgot how. It's just regaining the confidence and it doesn't take long, but boy does it weird me out. Like, I know what kind of lines I've ridden and what I'm capable of, but the gaps in between rides makes my brain do dumb shit. Like I'll have little thoughts like, "I know how to strap in, right?".

Ahhhh, yeah. I don't do the kicker thing, and while I don't ruminate this much with snowboarding/splitboarding, I get what you are saying (because I ruminate on loads of other stuff).

But yeah it's true, getting off that first chairlift ride always gives me a moment of "oh wait wat wo wo wo oh ahh haha ok yeah i got this…" 😅

But it's like riding a bike. We never forget. Hopefully 🤞🏼

When we say big kicker, what are we taking about?

I do none of it. Just curious 😜

Oh. yeah. I say big because it's like the biggest kicker at the bottom of the park so that's how my brain thinks about it, but it's really small midwest shit. I'm a bad judge of this but, idk, a 4ft kicker on top of a table, it'll maybe be 10ft lip to knuckle -15ft if you're landing on the down? By other standards it's just an average jump in a line. No superpark shit. I hope I'm not exaggerating it, I didn't ride over it to even get a sense of the size, I just went.

I'm still not hitting it, but I'll film you.

Midwest is a far better vibe than a whole lot of stuff out there, even some respected industry favorites.

Keep snowboarding fun, not scary

Agree. Midwest park stuff is still accessible for normal riders. I wish we still had any hills doing an old school regular size pipe dragon pipes.
