Re: The Mittens Thread
If you can find a deal on the Howl Down mitts I’d grab those. I don’t think any mitten is worth paying over $70 for
Re: The Mittens Thread
Not making recommendations, just sharing my experience. Used to be all about leather gore, but eventually got over the sheen of shmoo I would get on lenses over the season. We have a high need to keep up on waterproofing, and a high need for constant lens wiping, so it's fairly inevitable. I know some might think it's obvious to use one of those lens squeegees around your finger, but I don't like them. Simply went back to synthetic, and that problem went away.
Don't care to pay a premium just so it lasts longer, especially because all gloves eventually get kinda gross & fresh is nice. Had the best overall luck with the basics, like Burton gore mitt. Contrary to what seems to be everyone else's experience, haven't had good luck with POW. Had their leather gores and they acted like sponges, and tried their standard material gore ("wayback" mitt) and they fell apart quickly.
When I was running leather, favorite was dakine baron. Currently mostly running Burton gore undermitts. Picked up a pair of 686 linear mitts recently, which I have high hopes for, although they feel a fair bit more insulated than I'm used to. My hands don't run cold, so might be too hot. Synthetic leather palm seems more durable than what's on the Burtons, and I like that it's not that textured rubber fused to the main material, because it splits & peels quickly for me (POW wayback, volcom stay dry)

One question for all ya'll rocking leather mittens. How do you wipe your goggles after the white room?
edit: must've posted at the same time as @Spenser. But that comment about wiping goggles with a leather mitten was exactly my concern.

Had the Linears. Can confirm they’re very warm, gave them away to a buddy haha. Well made though for sure.Spenser wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 6:44 pm Picked up a pair of 686 linear mitts recently, which I have high hopes for, although they feel a fair bit more insulated than I'm used to. Everything except my hands I have tried so many mitts over the years from different brands trying to find warmest ones. I would assume the Ak oven mitts would be great but I am not paying what they are asking for those.Supra wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 5:41 pmOMG you must run so hot. I can only use my classic mitts on warmer days like -1, 0 days.Canuck wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 5:54 pm Salmon Arms classic mitts up here in the great white north all winter long great to -25c for me. Then Ak leather tech mitts in the spring.
I bought a pair of the Salmon arms and Howl down mitts at the same time 2 seasons ago.The salmon arms are much warmer IMO as now I only use the howls to walk the dog.

@bboytommy if you can stomach shopping at Backcountry these DaKine Gore mitts have an extra 20% off right now. My wife has had a pair for years and loves them.

Yo good looking out @scrub ! I'm not above shopping at backcountry, but those are over the cuff mittens and I really prefer under the cuff style. But! Looks like they have a pair of dakine barons on sale with that 20% off you called out. So I think I'll just run it back with those and maybe grab a liner to increase the warmth on colder days.
Thanks dood!!
Update: dammit, those barons have the finger liners!!! -_-

Re: The Mittens Thread
I do have some POW mitts (trench maybe?) that are too damn hot, think I've used them just a couple days. Need to be like 30 below celsius for those things to be comfy, facemask weather.

I’ve been all about the howl advance mitt. All leather but it has a synthetic goggle wipe on the thumb. Probably right up there with some of the best mitts I’ve ever owned. I think my all time favorites are Burton oven mitts though.
