Homewood Sunday. Palisades and Alpine are relatively exposed so not the best heavy storm riding locations IMO. Look at the Palisades trail map, only that lower far left zone has much tree coverage. Alpine also has relatively few dense tree coverage. Plus the scale and pitch of those resort requires extensive bombing, PLUS weekend + Imon means both driving 89 + parking will be a huge pain in the ass.

Homewood has lots of trees, has probably the best wind protection in Tahoe— the entire resort faces east and the resort doesn’t reach Ellis Peak summit, so basically no exposure. Plus it will be much more chill drive.

The main worry I’d have about Homewood is their staffing and they have had power issues in the past. I’ve never ridden there during this big a storm.

Sugar Bowl will be dope but I really wouldn’t suggest trying to get there from Tahoe City. 89 will be a mess and driving unfamiliar roads in a snowstorm on an all-weather rental sounds like bad news.

Palisades should be all-time Tuesday, Monday should be manageable as weekend crowds dissipate. But to provide some context I have an Ikon and paid $125 today to ride Sugar Bowl and not have to deal with aggro Palisades powder FOMO, driving 89, and dealing with the parking situation.

The one thing that might sway me to Palisades on Sunday might be if CalTrans shuts down 80 and Bay Area day trippers are cut off. But even then, I think I’d lean Homewood as long as Homewood’s running.

Really appreciate the info @kimchi. We got to homewood at 9 this morning and we were by ourselves for a solid hour and change. Barely saw anyone else until we started making our way back to the car early afternoon.

Ahhh good ol Homewood on a powder day is awesome. Hope you had some fun turns today!

I think Monday at Alpine/Palisades should be fun, although slow as they open lifts.

Sugarbowl on Tuesday will be fun, and roads should be better for the rental by then too.

I was watching the webcams and reports just to make sure I made a good recommendation. I had to double check they opened because I didn’t see a single person pass into frame on 10+ consecutive chairs lol.

Homewood is basically the perfect destination on that kind of day. It’s a pain in the ass to reach from basically every somewhat nearby metro, lodging that direction is limited, and the locals are chill boomer retirees who ain’t pow hunting. I’ve laid down fresh tracks at Homewood 2 days after a storm, everything rideable at Palisades will be tracked by mid day lol.

Must have been a great day. Palisades shut down by 1 and never opened the upper mountain, so basically played out the way I expected. Should be a lot of fun on Monday and Tuesday, but expect delayed openings, especially on the upper mountain.

I had a blast out there. With the forecast I was tempted to demo a pow gun, but opted to see how the Otto would handle a deep powder day. Got stuck a couple times but it wasn’t the boards fault by any stretch. I think the last time I rode snow that deep was when I lived at Snowmass over a decade ago.
The highlight of the day had to be getting the Tahoe we rented stuck not 10 feet from the driveway at our airbnb. Haha. We got out of the neighborhood in the morning, went riding and made it so damn close to getting back without issue. Some quick work with the shovel, and a helpful neighbor got us were we needed to be.

Lol making me feel better about getting it Saturday. Utah-esque snow quality. Hopefully today is sick.

Today was MUCH better, although the wet snow turned to crust so some spots were firm. Still can't complain, conditions got a lot better the past week.

I'm heading to Palisades for a week starting next Weds (Feb 14). Looks like high pressure and warm temps will be on the menu the whole time we're there.

What's good when it's warm there? I've ridden in Tahoe but not Palisades. I'll be with a huge group of skiers who are all pretty good, so we're down to explore the whole place and get into some interesting stuff.
