The Wax and Tune Ya Goon Thread
Re: The Wax and Tune Ya Goon Thread
Storage wax....hmmmmm surely there occurs oxidization on the base? I guess if you're in an area where the summers aren't that hot then you're ok.
When I used Hertel, I would do the storage wax and then on Opening day I'd just ride the boards like that, or if I was feeling really pumped I'd scrape. They were always fast. I think I will keep doing the storage wax, but try not taking bindings off before a wax.
Regarding the screwdrivers are you referring to how the ski screw drivers the resorts have available are too small for snowboard screws? K2's screws are the worst for that, while Burton screws are useable.

I got this, few seasons ago:kimchi wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 4:58 pmI only get anxiety because most people are using the WRONG straight driver. Phillips head #2s are much, much, much more common, and most riders don't realize they need PH3s for binding screws. So, so, so many stripped screws out there. A shop buyer I know told me he started stocking NOW-branded PH3s because he realized he'd literally never owned a PH3 before other than a snowboarding tool.Spenser wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 1:58 pm Another topic - what do we tighten our binding bolts with? People who use a straight driver give me anxiety. I've used the Burton bullet tool for years, with the little torque handle. Doesn't mean I over-tighten, but you get a more precise sense of how snug things are.
I actually prefer the straight driver as long as I'm not on-hill or using one of those damned chained screwdrivers at resorts. Ratchets are only necessary on snowboard tools because weird shapes and short necks compromise torque in the first place.

I needed a screwdriver for bindings, and I needed to reach 99€ to have the order of other parts shipped for free

Keep the base from drying out and protection. While yes, it will take years and years for a base to dry out, I still paid for the deck so I'm gonna treat it right, even in a hypothetical/maybe situation.
The storage wax, as some people have mentioned, also is really dependent on the environment in which one stores their decks during the summer...
As far as the drying out for me personally, I've seen more old decks ( which is still very few ) where the Ptex shrinks and starts to pull away from the edges more than I've seen the brittle. Gonna say it probably depends more on the quality of the base material and I can't say I've ever seen it on a modern snowboard, but have definitely seen it on some 90s decks for sure.
I go straight #3 all day long... Two finger tight all the way around till I can't turn the driver with just two fingers, then 1/2 a turn gripping the driver.

I've seen ptex shrinkage on vintage boards also, and certain brands seem to have it more than others. Palmers come to mind as vintage boards I see that on more than others. But idk that I think having a coat of wax on a board it would really change that, much at all.

I've got the Union #3 Straight Driver, as well. #fanboy
usually do a variation of the star pattern on the bolts to keep em all even, then give one good full power grip turn at the end.
I learned recently that some MFG's (don't remember who rn) actually use Posi-Drive bolts instead of regular #3 PH.

EST tool always in my pants pocket. Correct measurement with the screws. Always on hand for adjustments or whatever is needed. . I adjust to the stop (a bit more) without tightening. I don't like creating stress on the screws.

Pretty sure I’ve been using a 30 year old craftsman #3 that my dad passed down to me. I crank my bindings until I see dimples in the base and crack the discs
