Oh man. Wait until you find out the long lines of appropriation in music. Just one great song after another ruined by inspiration and influence of prior music. Even Kazu’s hardgoods from Capita and Union kinda have me feeling a bit weird about the Japan-esque fonts. Had those UCH Atlases from a couple seasons back and unloaded them because I couldn’t really get past it. Maybe I’m just soft.
Reminds me of when Chinese restaurants use that font on their storefronts.

I’m well aware, unfortunately. I figured this would be a slippery slope to weigh in on.

Re: Hardgoods 23/24
i hear you @ad1105. i'm asian and always find some of that stuff kinda "..." - at that point just use actual kanji/katakana or something.
Re: Hardgoods 23/24
Right?! I think it’d be rad to see Capita/Union use kanji or katakana for Kazu’s gear. Feels like an opportunity, if anything.
As another example, the Lib Lost Retro Ripper has such a rad shape and would be killer in Japow, but the Great Wave off Kanagawa graphics illicit that “…” feeling as well.

The Creative Director for CAPiTA is Ephrum Chui. He's been at CAPiTA from the inception and has full creative control of the look of the brand.ad1105 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 10:23 am Appropriation of Japanese art in snowboarding rubs me the wrong way, too. Read up on him and maybe you'll harden up. https://www.evo.com/discover/artistseries/ephchui

Damn, I forgot about Eph. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Hardgoods 23/24
Context is pretty important here. I never really thought too hard about "chop suey" fonts until you mentioned it. And apparently it has racist roots in late-19th century Orientalism. Which sucks, but at this point anyone using that font on a Chinese storefront is probably Chinese heritage. Basically the same difference between Jay-Z dropping the N-word and Mel Gibson dropping the N-word lol.ad1105 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 10:23 am Appropriation of Japanese art in snowboarding rubs me the wrong way, too. Real talk, Chinese people in particular will appropriate the FUCK out their culture (or white America's perception of their culture) if they think it'll convince white people will give them money lol. Most "Chinese" restaurants in America serve stuff like chop suey or General Tso's, shit that doesn't actually has true Chinese analogues... they've basically be formed to the white person's palate over the past 100+ years. If my mother-in-law goes to those restaurants, she's pulling the waiter aside and ordering off the actual "Chinese" menu lol. Another example, anyone who's ever been to San Francisco Chinatown knows it's a kitsch-ass tourist trap and Asia doesn't actually look like that. But Chinatown leaders themselves basically turned that place into Disneyland to make it more palatable to white folk after the 1906 quake (great podcast about that).
Put another way, I'm not too fussed about Panda Express, which is still privately owned by a Chinese heritage family... but FUUUUUUCK PF Chang's.
To the situation at hand, no problems with Kazu's art direction. He clearly is a driving force behind it and appreciates that traditional motif. I might be more fussed about Mine 77 situation if I gave two shits about it lol.

@nosedradamous what's retail on the Aeronaut? I already told George at Milo Auburn to hold me one.
