They’re not fragile like surfboards.
Um, when I worked at a shop I saw many fucked sidewalls from airline travel and did many receipt producing for customers for reimbursement.
Is it a huge issue? No. Does it happen? Yes. The pipe insulation literally cost me $2.50 Pretty cheap insurance. I’m good with that and less than 5 minutes to protect.
IMO if something catastrophic happens that produces enough force to wreck a steel sidewall, it’s certainly going to disregard a pool noodle. Still, can’t blame you for the extra peace of mind considering how shitty airlines are these days.
How reinforced/padded are those DB bags? Being able to roll them up for storage is super convenient but does that come at the cost of protection? I have a Buron Wheelie locker from 2009(?) that's on it's last legs, and while it's not very ergonomic the board compartment is pretty sturdy, with rigid reinforced sections at the tip and tail- I've never really thought about needing any additional padding from pool noodles or whatever.
On another note, considering all of the flight disruptions right now, for those of you who carry on boots, are you also carrying on all of your outerwear, goggles, helmet, etc.? I've had mostly good luck in the past with my bags making it but considering planning for the worst with a trip this weekend. The one time I had a board bag delayed iirc the airline did cover the cost of a new kit+rentals but it was like pulling teeth to get them to cough that up and it was 15 years ago so I wouldn't be surprised if it's even harder now.

Not very. They have a hard plastic "rib cage", but the material isn't that padded. Realistically the material burliness doesn't matter for anything other than abrasion damage and standing up to cuts from the edge. Like @eleveneightnate force rough enough to blow out a sidewall or dent an edge will blow through anything short of serious structural reinforcement, and I'm not willing to store a hard case when not in use.

I did all of this even before the recent flight disruptions. In priority, boots, base layers, goggles, outerwear, and socks. All the shit I wouldn't want to rent. Bindings if I have carry-on space. I also carry my helmet, but that's less because I don't want to rent one and more because I don't want that the foam getting unnecessary knocks in the baggage hold.

I figure if you're going to take boots, might as well take outwear, goggles and helmet in case you're out of the board and bindings. Would be a PITA to rent those.
For my check-in's, it's my avi backpack due to the gas container. You need to inform the airline prior with paperwork and at time of physical check-in, plus airport security.
In the end, I just get travel insurance for coverage and get reimbursed on anything that gets lost in transit. Hasn't happened ever which is lucky.
Back on topic though, sounds like a few of you have run the snow roller by Douchebags. I'll make the commitment!

The various canister airbag systems have never appealed to me... I'm waiting for the electric fan options to get a bit more traction and come down in price. The Osprey Soelden 32 looks really interesting to me, just knowing that Osprey makes great trekking bags. But still only like 3-4 meaningful options on the market here.
Black Diamond and Pieps had a few iterations go through the wringer and there was a recall a few years back. One of the sponsored Pieps skiers I knew was telling me about it.
Ortovox and Arc has come up w/ a new electronic system, but only 50 discharges can be used max. Not to say you're getting caught 50 times, but worth noting. https://www.ortovox.com/us-en/litric

Haha, thankfully no, I don't own it. Just work there, but love the place. Stoked you had a great experience, we aim to please and we kinda are SLCs apres-ski place since we are right at the bottom of both the canyons.

I have this bag from Patagonia, they seem to only have it on sale 3 months of the year. I got it 10 years ago, I liked it so much I bought two actually.
Fits my split board and solid when traveling.
Really durable, has been through the ringer with probably the worst baggage handlers on earth (JFK airport) — I've also dragged this multiple times across the streets and subways of NYC, so it's seen a lot of abuse. But totally bombproof
I've had to had it repaired once (free). The material is rip/puncture proof.
