We're off to chase some storms and plan to hit Red and White Water next week! Planning on doing more days at Red bc of our Ikon passes, but will definitely swing by Nelson and hit White Water. Ainsworth Hot Springs also sounds like fun while in Nelson.
Would love any beta on riding those two resorts.
@pow_hnd I remember reading you've been to Red and even did Big Red Cats a few times. Is that little cat at the top of Red Mtn fun to try for $20?

I did do Big Red back in the day, but would not pay to go there again.

Oh good to know. I guess after you try Baldface, it's tough to do other operations haha.pow_hnd wrote: Thu Feb 22, 2024 10:01 am I've never done the cat at Red.

I would pay for Retallack and Chatter Creek. Just not Big Red.

Re: Powder Highway, BC
Anyone done cat riding at White Grizzly, Mustang, or Monashee?
Re: Powder Highway, BC
I have been wanting to hit Red for a few years. I'm talking to a friend now about a trip next February. Do you have any advice on lodging and any good info on the town of Rossland?pow_hnd wrote: Sat Feb 24, 2024 4:33 pmI would pay for Retallack and Chatter Creek. Just not Big Red.
Re: Powder Highway, BC
Been there quite a few times, actually friends with the owners, they used to go to Baldface on the same trip as me before they bought Red.Oldhead wrote: Wed Apr 09, 2025 5:08 amI have been wanting to hit Red for a few years. Red has great on mountain lodging and there is places to stay in Rossland, but it's a small town for sure. Honestly is it were me, I'd stay in Nelson, much more to do and places to eat, and if you want to do Red it's like a 45 min drive and you have Whitewater outside of Nelson that gets quite a bit more snow than Red. Red is one of those mountains that is great when the snow if fresh, but is not so cool when its not fresh snow.

Re: Powder Highway, BC
A friend of mine just went to Red and Whitewater, he previously thought Red was the balls, but after getting to Whitewater he said that he'd choose that over Red for riding pretty much every time (not counting lodging, etc.). He's a NH guy and has also been to Baldface, but says that if he was younger and didn't already have kids, he'd move to Nelson in a heartbeat.
Re: Powder Highway, BC
Man, I love RED/Rossland and WhiteWater/Nelson equally for different reasons. WhiteWater does get more snow for sure, but RED is easily my pick if the storms have been delivering to both resorts. But maybe I'm saying that as someone who knows RED terrain a lot better, and I love the slopeside experience. Nelson is the better town with more good eats no doubt, but staying on the hill at RED is such great value!
We usually stay at the Josie hotel at RED @Oldhead. It's super convenient with its ski valet, and a short drive into town whenever you need supplies. I'd avoid the new Crescent condos, since they're still dialing in stuff and feels more like an Airbnb than a hotel.
Lastly, you could do time at both since they're so close. We normally do a few nights at RED, and a few nights in Nelson for WhiteWater / Baldface Lodge.

Agreed, if both mountains get 12" over night, I'd rather be at Red, much bigger mountain and less crowded, with great terrain. The issue is that the times that both hills get 12" over night on the same night, is far and few in between.bboytommy wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 12:23 pm but RED is easily my pick if the storms have been delivering to both resorts
Although only 45mins apart, Red gets like 300" a year and Whitewater gets about 500" a year.
