Are you able to demo? Especially in VT, I wouldn't imagine it's too hard to hop on a custom or some other twinnish Burton
Oh dude I am super picky and precise as well it’s a gift and a curse
I definitely may have to find a free demo day to try a few boards out it was just the custom and custom x that had called my attention but just thinking all of this through I think the custom x may be completely out of the picture and it’s narrowing down to do I be an idiot and spend almost a thousand dollars on a 8 year old board or get a custom and hope for the best (my wife rides the custom and I’ve tried it and it’s great, not much different than the antler I’d say to be completely honest) I think it may be my attachment to the antler as I’ve put it through more than any board I have owned

On a side note could you believe Burton charges $70 to demo a board? Like damn for $400 I could buy a brand new custom from them that’s nearly 1/4th of the purchase price

Ah, perhaps this is a practice in letting go more than anything 😂

If your antler is still holding up, I'd say just let it come to you. Hop on some other decks when you can, and go from there.

I know some demos cost money, but it seems weird to me that it's not free more often... or at least the $70 could be a day pass to try as many as you want. Seems like the antithesis of a demo. That said, we've never had them up here, so I can't exactly relate.

Asking price on a NOS antler shouldn't be extreme. Not to take away from how much you like it, but it was never "special," it's not a collector, etc

I think you are right as it narrows me down further to how bad would it be to buy an 8 year old board that is still in shrink wrap in Japan in some warehouse somewhere? Especially for $850 plus customs import fees it’ll be a grand at least

And if I do go for a custom would I really want that 1.5 to go to 156 or would I remain similar and go down to a 154.. seems 154 may be better to feel similar.. sort of answering my own questions to an extent which is very good and I do appreciate any input

I think you’re right, I took a risk on the antler and it paid off so I’m sure the next deck may as well

As for the price on a new antler, what would you say is a fair price for a sealed 8 year old board? These eBay sellers are really something

As for a base that’s getting pretty thinned out is there anything I could do besides avoid base grinds on my tune ups? Thankfully I am quite efficient at being able to hop over any random rocks and branches that come up so I’ve saved the life of the base quite a lot with that over the years and also become a part time rabbit hippity hop

I don't see why an "older" board with no particularly special value should be even close to full price. 850 is insane. Personally I think any seller should be pretty happy if they got even half that.

Sounds like you should probably avoid any more base grinds.

Don't get too hung up on the total length. That's only material length, not a spec package. Imagine if the tip & tail kicks on your antler were each 1cm longer… All the sudden it's technically a 156.5 and you're questioning it, even though it's literally the same ride.

That said, the antler 54.5 specs are nearly identical to a custom 54. The 58 makes a jump in width and radius for example, which will make it feel like that much more board. Not inherently a bad thing, but if you don't want to change the general feeling of board size...

Thank you for your help
It looks like the custom 54 is probably going to be quite similar to the antler 54.5 and a fresh start eventually
On that note I am off for the night. I’m going to ride Mount snow all day in the morning so I’ll take a look back tomorrow in between at some point
These boards have some strange non traditional nose shapes these days like the custom is not rounded which throws me off a bit but I’m sure it’s just appearance not performance
Have a goodnight 💤

After some research I have three concerns in the custom vs the antler
The flex rating worries me that the custom may be more noodle-y than the antler
The setback for the antler is 0mm versus the custom which has a 12.5mm stance setback, what does this entail?

The custom has a Super Fly II™ 700G Core versus the antler which has a FSC™ Certified Dragonfly™ 600G Core
Is the antler made of better and lighter materials?

Also the antler has 60 degree carbon highlights as opposed to the customs 45 degree carbon highlights

If anyone could help me clarify these I would greatly appreciate any input thank you

the Antler was closer to the X as far a construction goes. snappier/lighter than the regular Custom, but I think the 60 vs 45 carbon highlights were intended to make the Antler more stable nose to tail vs the 45 on the Customs more reactive toe to heel.
the extra setback on the Custom is really just a longer nose kick, on edge, it’s going to tide like a twin.
midwest is best

The Antler was meant to be a softer freestyle-oriented board, constructed with higher-end materials. Custom is more versatile and certainly not a noodle compared to the Antler. 60degree carbon highlights provide more longitudinal pop in a softer profile. 45degree carbon highlights allow for more consistent flex and pop torsionally and longitudinally.
a bit of taper, a lot of camber

I came to a conclusion for my board solution, I am going to buy another burton antler 154.5 used in good condition now I just have to keep my eye out on listings, doesn’t have to be the same graphic I have so I’m open to any camber antler 54.5 if you guys happen to know anyone trying to sell one or come across any for sale please send it my way! Thank you
I don’t use Facebook so if anyone finds one on marketplace that could ship I could pass you my cell to get me in touch with a seller
Thanks!
