I think it'd be great if bigger brands like B just carry'd over their boards each season instead of putting new graphics on the same model, I think it'd help reduce a lot

100% agree. Or at least have the same graphic for like 2/3 sales cycles. Also if they would just stop with the models that are just around for a season or two. Hell, there's been a bunch of decks that are only one season from B.

i'm gonna sound like a broken record but retail is just straight hurting. i work with ppl that distribute brands like klattermusen + other outdoors-ish brands in the US and half the retailers either cant pay up or cancelling orders altogether - it's never been this bad.

TLDR: Major brands just aren't going to make the same graphics YOY.

Short term or individual interests and rewards on average will always trump long term or group interests and rewards. Its why game theory works how it does. Even if the 'system' gets reset and everyone agrees to abide (like the dude) for a while, eventually things will end up back where they are now. Because even if everyone wins if everyone abides by the rules that are best for everyone; the first to breaks rank reap oversized rewards, so it's way better to be the first to fuck everyone over vs. be play by the rules and get fucked over. As long as we're valuing tangible rewards as the measurement of success in this life (vs. something intangible) there will always be someone willing to be first. Alternately I would say also beware of any person or group that has agendas which don't have a defined end goal which can actually be satisfied, because they're not in it for the cause, but for the personal benefits of a continuation of the problem.

Imo one of the biggest issue we face today is that day after day we get bombarded with more evidence that at this point that those who break the rules get rewarded, and those that follow the rules are punished, and we're all getting fucked. No one even seems to be hiding their gross transgressions anymore and everyone is clued in that the more morally bankrupt they are, the better people seem to do.

It takes a staunch character to hold firm to making decisions that both in the short-term and even sometimes long-term will not be to their benefit, but align with their personal highest sense of right. Generally the people who do that only do that because they're actually not being faced with a choice. Once someone finds a way they can personally benefit from some system (whether monetarily or socially), they will to some degree internally rationalize and justify their choices to do so. The cognitive dissonance will be remedied as easily as possible; most often by playing a victim who has no choice. But I digress.

At least not since the last time it was this bad.

The economy continues to crack, stores close, jobs go bye, and we have a long cycle of economic austerity and depression... or they drop interest rates and maybe we even get another round of QE, prop markets and inflation keeps pumping. In my mind, I don't know if they can really do the first.

(Edit: Idk how they do the first due to the cost of servicing the US debt, which is increasingly more and more of the budget so really the interest rate needs to go down. But then again, as I understand there's also demand for higher interest from buyers of bonds created to cover that debt servicing. And then ultimately if bonds don't have buyers, the fed will have to print more money buy those bonds which leads to inflation anyhow. )

Wheeee

yeah I get that, it's a quick and cheap way to remarket the same product over. but it's such a waste and puts unnecessary pressure for small shops to clear out inventory before the next season

surfboard companies don't do this, but I guess since they don't follow the same sales cycles as the ski/snowboard industry

Both Burton & Salomon did it this last season on their Cartograhper & High Path boards, the HPS series actually carried over 100% for at least the last 3 years, as well. and Rossignol, while not "big" in the core sense, does sell a ton of boards worldwide, has been on a full line 2-year cycle for graphics since around 2020.

hard to say whether that was an intentional decision from either brand, or they just had wayyy too much stock left in those models after the 2023 season.

I don't see any other big brand going all in with full line carryovers, but a few select models or series from each brand carrying over for a few seasons would be nice to see.

I love this about surfing. Most of the time when you get a magic board you never want to give it up. It's more about building a quiver for conditions than keeping up with the latest graphics or whatever.

Burton do a white top custom with a black base that is meant to carry over. I too wish they did it more.

I am really considering some quiver reduction and getting a hometown hero, I love my split version.

Burton has been doing a fair amount of carryover the past couple years (as some have noted above). Examples: a number of Family Tree boards (Hometown Hero in particular), some of the entry and mid level boards, a lot of boots and bindings, and a decent amount of outerwear.

I’ve been happy to see that, and really like the white/black Custom and Feelgood. I think we’ll see a lot more carryover cycles starting to happen for the reasons mentioned above.

All that said: WHO’S RIDING THIS WEEKEND??
