Its my understanding that PFAS are banned as of 2025, and most all of the waterproof tech uses them now and there's not a equal quality waterproof fabric that can be made without them at this time. Whether or not Gore or whatever is made elsewhere (it's my understanding that gore was made in the us and that was part of maintaining the grip on the tech and money) I can't say, but it wont be made stateside...at least without changing the product and then certainly, optically, it seems like brands are or will soon be distancing themselves from these things. So, donezo as far as they exist now, seemingly possible.

Gore is 99% marketing. There are plenty of credible videos on youtube that clearly show equivalent performance (lab wise) with all matters of membranes and constructions. (Neoshell, some Schoeller fabrics etc). I'm not worried.

I think it’s gonna come down to durability. I’m sure water repellency results can look similar in a lab, but I can neglect the shit out of my Gore jackets for a good while and they still work because of how “forever” the PFAS is haha.

It’s quite the conundrum. The thing that makes them “forever chemicals” is why they’re so waterproof. I read an article somewhere that said anything else is going to require frequent washing and treatment to even get close to the waterproof levels we’re used to. I’d say it’s probably a good idea to stock up on your favorite Gore stuff like @pow_hnd did.

While I did stock up, it was because of jacket design, not anything to do with the Gore or DWR. Actually this years AK has the "new" DWR. It is not lasting as long, I can noticeably tell. I've washed and re-DWR'd my jacket and bibs twice this season.

PFAS

Hot topic in our new city. Apparently Chemours (DuPont) was (is?) leaking PFAS into the Cape Fear River (our drinking water source) for decades. Crazy high concentrations of cancer all over the counties where that Chemours facility upstream is. I think Gore-Tex is going through the same shit with their facility up north... it seems like nobody can produce anything related to PFAS without leaking it into people's water sources.

The local water district put in huge charcoal filtration systems and is suing Chemours, but it certainly makes me rethink eating any fish I catch in the intercoastal...

I'm not an expert in this matter, but TBH I'm glad that the change/ban is happening (if it's happening). I've had a proper love affair w/ Gore that goes way back and most recently bought a Gore jacket for the back country. I've tried searching (and bought a Fjallraven) for a non-Gore alternative that had a "better" track record, but the fit just didn't work. Hopefully companies design better fitting snowboard jackets and pants with eco-friendly alternatives and we as consumers take care of our gear and regularly apply wax or whatever is used.

But I imagine all the people who aren't into snowsports that are subject to the alleged Chemours/Dupont dumping of PFAS. It's pretty terrible knowing this now. No amount of fines and clean up activities are going to amount to those diagnosed with cancer as a result.

Anyhow, for those of you looking into other more natural alternatives; I have bought a McNair mountain shirt made to measure and it is legit. For resort riding and side country, it does and looks the part. What you pay now for this is not far off from what you're paying for high end gore stuff.

I have used waxed cotton anoraks and woolshell, and it's fine most of the time. What people used before, and lotsa hunting gear still made like that, since it's quiet and more durable.

Surely the snowboard fashion brands can make stuff like that too.
